Estimate the intensity of rainfall based on a measurement of the level of the signal received from the satellite is the goal of the NEFOCAST project, coordinated by MBI, funded by the Tuscany Region and co-funded by the FSC and MIUR
Based on data gathered by Smart LNB and an innovative calculating algorithm, it is now possible to have a real time map of precipitation fields. Information is provided by new generation domestic satellite receivers built by MBI and the satellite operator Eutelsat. The algorithm was developed by the research group of Professor Giannetti of the Department of Information Engineering of the Pisa University. The higher the number of Smart LNB terminals used, the more acurate the real time map is. “In the next few years, the number of Smart LNB terminals is expected to grow, gradually replacing satellite systems now in use in most homes. Therefore, it will be possible in a short time to have a very detailed map of the state of rainfall at a global level.”
